Dear Art Lovers,

We are thrilled to invite you to the opening of Som Jeg Husker Det, the second solo exhibition at Galleri Christoffer Egelund by Danish artist Michael À Grømma.

Grømma offers a deeply moving look at the fragile nature of memories, the way we carry our past into our present, and the way we live with the memories of the deceased. Grømma is the sole guardian of the family’s collective stories and memories. Through his paintings, he navigates the weight of this responsibility and explores his childhood in Odsherred: a place and time that now only exists in his mind. His painting style almost eschews the precise straight lines and instead employs a fluid, vibrant aesthetic that recalls the way we remember the past: slightly out of focus, partly naive renderings of spaces, interiors and views, coloured by emotions that acknowledge the distance that time has created.

At the same time, he manifests that every object in the paintings has an important role to play. With the strong colour palette, nostalgia and cheerful perspectives on canvas and wood, one immediately sense that no details or brushstrokes are accidental. In the patterned rug, wallpaper, vinyl records, books and numerous potted plants, a deeper domestic and intimate story is hidden. Grømma manages to regain a sense of connection to the family he has lost and the one he has created. The exhibition functions as a bridge between two lives: the artist’s past in the countryside and his current city life in Copenhagen with his wife and children. In many ways Michael Á Grømma’s cherished memorabilia works are an act of preservation and healing, where the paintings are the “meeting place” between the belongings of his deceased family and the life of his current family. A place where they can coexist.

A part of the exhibition is dedicated to a darker chapter in the artist’s journey through grief. After the death of his mother, Grømma found a unique form of solace in the darkest corners of Black Metal music.

“After my mother passed away, I found meaning and understanding in the darkest corners of metal music. That is why I have dedicated part of the exhibition to the theme of being drawn into the darkness and feeling understood and embraced by the powerlessness and anger in the music; to have a place where the emotions that grief and depression can produce can be felt throughout the body and not tried to be cured but accepted as they are, and described and interpreted” - Michael Á Grømma

The exhibition consists of 25 new paintings, a large installation and various linoleum prints. The production of the works has been supported by the Danish Arts Foundation (Statens Kunstfond) & the Poul Johansen Foundation.
