INTRODUCING SCULPTOR MARC SPARFEL

Art can come from unexpected contexts and situations and it can change the way we think about the environment that surrounds us every day. A skilful artist can find inspiration from really uncommon places and can transform forgotten things into thought-provoking artworks. This is why it's not surprising that a new, colorful and vibrant scuplture was once a forgotten piece of furniture on the streets of Barcelona - until Marc Sparfel came.

Marc Sparfel's artistic creations diverge from pure abstraction. They incorporate imposing grids, both geometric and irregular, that the artist meticulously constructs, paints, and merges into an ideal unity using fragments of wood salvaged from the streets. These forms not only evoke historical and territorial connections but also reflect elements of everyday life.

The structures within Sparfel's work defy rigidity, instead showcasing an agile quality. This is achieved through his skillful utilization of fragile wood and the application of fresh, vibrant colors—often saturated and primary hues. The wooden objects that constitute his sculptures are reclaimed materials sourced from the city, such as doors, wardrobe back panels, and false ceilings. Sparfel repurposes and reuses these discarded materials, transforming them into fossilized urban artifacts that reverse the natural course of time.

Marc Sparfel was born in 1972 in Brittany in the North-West of France. He graduated in Commerce in Tours. At the age of 23 he began to study Visual Communication, primarily focussing on photography, drawing, engraving, and art history. In 1999 he moved to Barcelona, Spain, where he still lives today. Being immediately intrigued by the sheer amount of wood abandoned in the streets, he gradually began to incorporate these material into his sculptures. First, he used furniture in a long series of masks, animals and mythological beings. Now, using simple wood scraps, he is building geometrical and abstract constructions. Currently his work is exhibited in Spain, France, Germany, the United States, Israel, The Netherlands, Dubai and in our gallery in Copenhagen.

You can experience Sparfel's vibrant sculptures among other great artworks at SUMMERTIME'23 THE ANNUAL GROUP SHOW at Bredgade 75. The exhibition can be seen until August 18th, 2023.
