INTRODUCING DANIEL O'TOOLE
Expanding upon the "light and space" movement that originated in 1960s Los Angeles, O'Toole's work finds its place within the contemporary Australian art scene shaped by the post-digital era. Through mediums such as painting, video, sound, and installation, he blurs the boundaries between different disciplines, seeking a cohesive outcome that harmonizes various aspects of his artistic practice. Embracing imperfection and intentionally utilizing low-resolution shooting techniques, he incorporates these aesthetic choices into his work. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences with synesthesia, he strives to establish a cohesive dialogue between different forms of sensory communication, particularly exploring the connection between color and sound. Employing materials that change in response to light, he influences visual perception and revitalizes static images. By challenging the dominance of digital screens, his work emphasizes the act of "seeing" as an active engagement rather than a passive reception.
"In a culture immersed in a digital dialogue, the value of images is in quick decline. The time for consideration is being eroded by an insatiable appetite for endorphins. The refraction effect that is explored in my painting and sculpture is intended to draw attention to the time it takes for light to enter and return from the space within the frame."
Daniel O’Toole (b. 1984) is a multi-media artist based in Melbourne. He studied at National Art School in Sydney and has been a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize and Calleen Art Award. Daniel works in a variety of media including painting, video, sound and installation. Formerly a street artist, O'Toole has focused on this new series of video works and paintings that rely heavily on music to visualise the experience of listening. His works were exhibited wordwide in Sydney, Melbourne and Brussels among others.
It's hard to capture the real magic of O'Toole's vibrant works in a picture so we recommend you to have a look at it in person at our SUMMERTIME '23 group show at Bredgade 75. The exhibition can be seen until August 18th, 2023.
